A quantitative Doignon-Bell-Scarf theorem

چکیده
The famous Doignon-Bell-Scarf theorem is a Helly-type result about the existence of integer solutions to systems of linear inequalities. The purpose of this paper is to present the following quantitative generalization: Given an integer k, we prove that there exists a constant c(n, k), depending only on the dimension n and k, such that if a bounded polyhedron {x ∈ Rn : Ax ≤ b} contains exactly k integer points, then there exists a subset of the rows, of cardinality no more than c(n, k), defining a polyhedron that contains exactly the same k integer points. In this case c(n, 0) = 2n as in the original case of Doignon-BellScarf for infeasible systems of inequalities. We work on both upper and lower bounds for the constant c(n, k) and discuss some consequences, including a Clarkson-style algorithm to find the l-th best solution of an integer program with respect to the ordering induced by the objective function.

Integer Programs with Prescribed Number of Solutions and a Weighted Version of Doignon-Bell-Scarf's Theorem
In this paper we study a generalization of the classical feasibility problem in integer linear programming, where an ILP needs to have a prescribed number of solutions to be considered solved. We first provide a generalization of the famous Doignon-Bell-Scarf theorem: Given an integer k, we prove that there exists a constant c(k, n), depending only on the dimension n and k, such that if a polyh...
متن کاملComplexity of Scarf’s Lemma and Related Problems
Scarf’s lemma is one of the fundamental results in combinatorics, originally introduced to study the core of an N -person game. Over the last four decades, the usefulness of Scarf’s lemma has been demonstrated in several important combinatorial problems seeking stable solutions ([12], [1] [2], [15]). However, the complexity of the computational version of Scarf’s lemma (Scarf) remained open. In...
متن کاملThe inverted Z bunionectomy: quantitative analysis of the scarf and inverted scarf bunionectomy osteotomies in fresh cadaveric matched pair specimens.
Quantitative analyses of the Scarf/Z and inverted Scarf/Z bunionectomy osteotomy procedures utilizing two-screw fixation were performed in fresh cadaveric specimens. Eighteen trials (nine matched pair feet) were used for direct comparison. Ultimate strength and failure areas were examined. Trial results revealed a strong statistically significant positive effect. The inverted Z approach was fou...
متن کاملWeighted graphs defining facets: A connection between stable set and linear ordering polytopes
A graph is α-critical if its stability number increases whenever an edge is removed from its edge set. The class of α-critical graphs has several nice structural properties, most of them related to their defect which is the number of vertices minus two times the stability number. In particular, a remarkable result of Lovász (1978) is the finite basis theorem for α-critical graphs of a fixed def...
متن کاملCoalition strategy-proofness and monotonicity in Shapley-Scarf housing markets
This paper studies (single-valued) solutions to housing markets (Shapley and Scarf, 1974) with strict preferences. I show that a solution is monotonic if and only if it is coalition strategy-proof. I point out that the strong core solution is the only solution which is monotonic, individually rational and an onto function. (As Roth and Postlewaite (1977) showed, the strong core solution is sing...
